Trolley Trail
The Trolley Trail between Berwyn and Hyattsville is an easy, fun stroll. My family decided to park a car on Berwyn Road and walk the Trolley Trail to Hyattsville on a recent sunny Saturday. We parked on the street near one of our favorite restaurants, Fishnet, and it took a little over an hour to walk to another favorite, Franklin’s. Along the way we passed through Old Town (just a short hop from the Old Parish House), Calvert Hills, Riverdale Park, and Hyattsville.
The path is paved the entire way and only crosses one major road (Campus Drive) at a crosswalk with a stoplight. The path is level and wide. The only hazard is that you need to be aware that bicycles are frequent on the Trolley Trail, so you should stay aware and keep to the edge of the path. The path also crosses streams on nice pedestrian bridges.
Near the halfway point, Riverdale Park offers several options for refreshments that are just off the trail, but I would recommend that each person carry a water bottle. If it is sunny, you will want a hat, as several sections of the trail do not offer shade.
As a person who cares about the environment, the principles of Leave No Trace are important to me. Remember to stay on the trail and resist the urge to pick flowers! “Take only pictures, and leave only footprints.” There are numerous trash and recycling receptacles along the trail. You may enjoy looking at our Scavenger Hunt to challenge your creativity as you walk.
If you join the community in celebrating Trolley Trail Day on June 8, remember to use the hashtag #trolleytrailday as you commemorate your experience on social media, along with your Scavenger Hunt creations. Drop by the Old Parish House from noon to 4 pm to do arts and crafts with College Park Arts Exchange — make a map, a felt mascot, a button, or a beading project — and check out information tables and local music both at the OPH and at the other hubs.
