Old Parish House, Knox Rd, College Park View mapDouble bassist Andrew Brown and pianist Tatiana Mann join forces for a fun and interesting evening of classical music at the Old Parish House in College Park. The program will include pieces by Paul Hindemth, Joaquín Turina and George Gershwin. Both performers hold doctorate degrees and have years of experience as performers.
Marylander Andrew William Brown (bass) studied bass with Ludwig Streicher and holds a Ph.D. In Music Acoustics. He made his first bass in 2015 and completed Nr. 6, his 3/4 Guarneri model, in 2023.
From 1991-2005, he made his living in Vienna, Austria as a founding member of Salonorchester Alhambra, as well as playing opera and contemporary classical music, pop and jazz. He worked in the violin shop of Christine Eriks and his first tonewood acquisition was in 2003. He harvested a premium spruce dating from 1803 from the Italian Alps, had it felled, milled and shipped to Baltimore. Poplar and maple have been sourced from Europe, upstate New York and the West Coast. His models include an enlarged copy of his 1878 Enrico Bajoni and the 3/4 Guarneri.
Andrew is the definition of “hands-on,” milling tonewood, brewing oil- and spirit varnishes, and machining his own bass tuners and other hardware. He uses impulse input admittance measurements to tune the top and back plates of new basses.
Dr. Tatiana Mann (piano) holds graduate degrees in Piano Performance from the Royal Academy of Music, Manhattan School of Music and University of Minnesota. A passionate advocate of music education, Dr. Mann uses her research on beat perception and piano technique, to make a difference in her students’ learning and playing.
As an arts administrator with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Mann was the founding executive director of the Wildwood Academy for Music and the Arts (WAMA) in Little Rock, AR – a summer program that provides arts and music instruction, with a focus on children with limited opportunities. She is passionate about mentoring young musicians and helping them make a difference in their lives through classical music.
Tatiana has performed around the world as a recitalist, concerto soloist and as a chamber musician, including in Canada, Europe and in Australia. Most recently Tatiana can be heard on Naxos playing the big band version of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue; as well asperforming works by Kernis, Copland and Prokofiev on the album Finding Home, released on SONY Classical Korea in 2022. Upcoming and recent performances include recitals in Virginia, Minnesota and Texas.
